What Lies Between Us by John Marrs

What Lies Between Us (buy here!) is a shocking psychological thriller. It had me on the edge of my seat, frantically turning pages as I rushed to learn what was going on.

It tells the story of a twisted mother-daughter relationship, describing the extreme possible consequences of lies and abuse.

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

Everyone knows that some books are better than others. Often people avoid saying it, because it sounds kind of mean! But it’s the truth.

Everything I Never Told You (buy here) is one of those books that is just slightly better than a lot of other books. It just is. It feels so real. The writing style is clear and engaging. The story touches the reader. I have so, so much to say about this book!

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

This is my glowing and SPOILER FREE review of Collins’ latest novel: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (available to buy here!).

I was so surprised to hear about this release (and don’t even get me started on Stephanie Myer’s new book) – it feels a bit like I’ve randomly been sent back in time to 2010. I didn’t have high expectations honestly, but I was really pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the story, I enjoyed the writing, and I enjoyed the fact it made me think! It’s not often a YA book can do all those things so well.

MAID by Stephanie Land

I decided to read MAID because Obama recommended it to me. Unfortunately he didn’t personally ring me up to say “hey Isabel, you should read this great book”, I just saw on Amazon that it was his “Summer Reading Pick of 2019” and bought it on Kindle.

And I am SO glad I metaphorically picked it up: it was a seriously wonderful read, and you should read it too (buy here!). Stephanie reveals the shortcomings of America in her truthful and heart-breaking story.

When, I saw that All the Bright Places had been released on Netflix, I was so excited. I had no idea it was coming out, and I immediately remembered how much I loved the book by Jennifer Niven.

I’m not really going to talk about the movie today (except to say it was great and touched my heart and you should watch it) but I am going to recommend you read the YA book! You can buy it here!

How to start reading every day

Sometimes my life feels like it constantly alternates between phases of intense reading and periods of complete reading lethargy. And this is coming from someone who loves books! During times when I can’t focus on reading, I find myself wishing I could motivate myself more or just magically get focussed. The desire to read is present, but I just can’t manifest that desire into actually opening a book! It drives me crazy.

Recently, I’ve realised that a lot of people I know feel like this sometimes. Most of my friends and family like reading or wish they read a little more, but they either can’t get motivated to read, or find themselves distracted whenever they try.

Four Absorbing Books About Pandemics

I don’t know about you, but when I don’t know what to read, I turn to the world around me for inspiration. A few weeks ago, I found myself googling ‘books about pandemics’, wanting for reason to read about a pandemic – but not the current one!

Reading is an escape from the world, so it might seem strange to want to read about pandemics at a time when the coronavirus has consumed us. But I think these books suspend your disbelief, and by offering “worst case scenario” storylines, might even make you more grateful for our reality.
